What Does Stump Grinding Involve?

We often get asked what stump grinding actually involves so we’ve put together some information. Put simply, stump grinding is the method of removing a stump after a tree has been cut using equipment that generally is a large wheel with teeth that chips away at the stump to below the surface of the ground. It is an effective method of getting rid of stumps, particularly where you want minimum ground disturbance – this may be because of:

  • A new building is to be constructed
  • A new fence erected
  • To remove a trip hazard in a public place
  • When your lawn mower keeps getting damaged!

Stump grinding has the added bonus that the bi product from grinding is a mixture of soil, wood mulch and stone – great for mulching the garden. However, this is not recommended if the stump was diseased. Once the stump is removed your garden area is increased and you can replace the stump with a shrub, a plant or lawn in the open space that remains.
